The World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas has satellite competitions in various cities, with the winner of each moving on to the Main Event in Vegas in September. This year marks the first Sacramento satellite, being held at Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club. Hundreds of comedians from around the country applied, with 40 being chosen to compete. Michael O’Connell will be among them.
The contest takes place from April 20-23, with various head-to-head rounds. Michael’s heat will be on Friday night, the 22nd, at 10:30 PM. If he moves on, he’ll be in the finals on Saturday the 23rd.
Tickets are available for all shows here.
The nerd-themed comedy show produced by Michael O’Connell’s Ramp Up Productions is now bi-monthly at its new home, the Sacramento Comedy Spot. A rotating cadre of some of Sacramento’s best–and nerdiest–comedians drop all geek material on crowds, with topics ranging from sci-fi to fantasy to super-heroes to wrestling to cartoons and more.
The first of the Sacramento Comedy Spot shows will take place on February 26, 2016. More information and tickets are available here.
Michael will be performing at a stand-up comedy panel at Wizard World Comic-Con in Sacramento on Friday night, June 19th at 7:30 PM.
Produced by O’Connell’s company, Ramp Up Productions, the program—called “Stand-Up Nerdity”—will feature performances based solely on “nerd” material, ranging from movies to TV to sci-fi and more. He’ll be joined by some of Sacramento’s hottest comics, including Robert Berry, Luke Soin, Damian Harmony, Carlos Rodriguez and Ngaio Bealum.
The show, which is free with convention admission, takes place in room 314 at the Sacramento Convention Center.

The fourth annual Sacramento Comedy Festival will be held September 12-20 at the Sacramento Comedy Spot (and other venues), and wheelchair comedian Michael O’Connell will be competing in the Stand-Up Competition against comics from around the country.
O’Connell’s preliminary round will be on Thursday, September 18 at 7:00PM at the Sacramento Comedy Spot, where he will compete in a group of nine, of whom two will advance. If he moves on, the semi-final round will be Friday, September 19, at 9:00PM. If he then advances to the final, he’ll compete on Saturday, September 20 at 10:30PM for the grand prize.
The nine-day festival celebrates all forms of stage comedy, from stand-up to improv to sketch comedy. Competitions will be held for each genre. Welcome, past friends and new! This is the new version of MichaelOComedy.com, the home page of comedian Michael O’Connell (me). It seemed like time for a new one, and I wanted to take some steps out by having the web page and the blog in one place. Here’s what we got. Thanks, WordPress!
It also seemed like a time for a change since it’s my big return to comedy. About four months ago, I sort of almost died. And then I had a stroke a month after that. Those are stories for another time (I’m already telling them on stage, of course), but the short version is that, after a surprisingly fast but not easy recovery, I’m back in comedy and trying to hit it hard. So consider the rebirth of this page as symbolic for the rebirth of me.
I work solo, I work with my comedy groups (The Comedians with Disabilities Act and The Mikes), I produce shows, and I’m looking forward to meeting YOU (assuming we haven’t already, which, if we have, what’s up?). I take the whole wheelchair aspect of my life and turn it into funny (with a little education thrown in as a bonus). Come see me! Or hire me. Whatever your fancy.
Check out all the pages on here and keep checking back for blog updates on upcoming events and such. Welcome to the party! Grab some Chex Mix! And use a coaster, for God’s sake.
